Killed Oral Vaccine against Cholera

In a series of Phase 1 clinical studies funded by a Programme Grant from the Wellcome Trust Prof David  Lewis, Professor Griffin, Prof Dougan and Dr Luiz Castello-Branco determined in detail the kinetics of the T and B cell responses of humans to oral cholera whole-cell / B subunit vaccine developed by SBL Vaccin Sweden. These studies are published and provided the model for subsequent oral vaccine studies.

In addition, Dr Lewis and Prof Griffin described the effect of infection with HIV and the onset of AIDS on the immune responses to the oral cholera vaccine. These studies laid the foundation for further studies in Brazil by Dr Luiz Castello-Branco, Dr Ortigao, Prof Griffin, Dr R Shattock, Dr Lewis and others on the effect of oral vaccination on circulating HIV virus.
